The compatible chassis solution for running Avid Digidesig ProTools cards is the Magma PE6R4-I expansion unit. It's been tested and certified to work with ProToold HD PCIX cards and with MacPro Intel computers.

The Magma PE6R4-I is composed of a 550 Watt power supply unit, one 3-meter iPass cable, Expansion Card, backplane and one PCIE x8 host interface card.

It has available six PCI-X slots, in which you can plug-in 6 ProTools PCI-X cards or any combination of PCI or PCIx cards.

The Magma PE6R4-I is the replacement of the old PE6R4 unit. Both backplanes are the same but the rest of are different.

UPGRADE:
If you have an old PE6R4 unit, yes you can definitely upgrade this to a PE6R4-I model.
You would need to buy a new PE6NE-I boardset, this includes the host card, cable, expansion card and backplane. When performing the upgrade it is also smart to upgrade your existing power supply to the most current 550 Watt power supply.
Some of the old expansion unit may require to replace the back panel.

If you have an old 13 slot ot 7 slot expansion units, units that us over four or five years old. It can't be upgraded because the metal enclosure won't be able to accommodate the new expansion motherboard. The solution is to buy a new Magma PE6R4-I unit.

Here is a youtube video on how to upgrade your Expansion unit to PE6R4-I using the PE6NE-I
