Expansion Technology

PCI & PCIExpress Expansion Systems

Do you guys have any info on OSX 10.6.1 Snow Leopard compatibility.
Please let me know.

So far we have not tested the snow leopard yet.
On the other hand, one of our end-user who owns 1 slot and a 4 slot CB4DRQ running them on a MacBook Pro, 2.6Ghz Core 2 Duo with 4Gb RAM via the ExpressCard Magma card, have installed Pro Tools 8.0.3 pre release for Snow Leopard and it seems to
work fine.

Any info or issues you would like to share are highly appreciated

From what I know, which is very informal, is only comments from a couple weeks ago that there haven't been very many stumbling blocks moving Pro Tools into Snow Leopard. The performance is the same or better on all qualified Intel Macs and the main big issues are those listed on the 8.0.3pr page, IE the 5 AIR plug-ins being yellow (10.4-10.5 deja vu!) and no Avid Video peripherals compatibility. There have been minor roadblocks but all have had some sort of workaround, at least so far. In comparison, the transition from 10.4 to 10.5 was much more drastic (for most all companies/developers) and took some serious lifting from all branches of the development team and many many man hours of testing.

We don't offer support on 8.0.3, so I personally haven't had calls about it. But I have been editing post sessions nightly with it, all audio though, with no show stopping type issues. The font is more bold on dialog windows and very few minor graphical things, transport turned white on me a couple times when minimized, clicking on it or relaunching session fixed it.

The DUC forum would have the most up to date source of info:

I recommend using SuperDuper! or Carbon Copy Cloner to image your drive, if you want to try it out, so that way in a matter of minutes you can switch back to 10.5 drive if things go south. I wouldn't move completely to 8.0.3pr just yet in any studio that can't have downtime. But you can always try it and see and post your results here!
Also, this is more for customers that find this thread, but I found it was important for my rig to do a clean uninstall of Pro Tools 8.x and take out whatever is there.

Install PT 8 from DVD or download, restart.
install PT8.0.3pr, restart.

Technically, any version of 8 you can install this on top of, but this will make sure you don't have mixed versions or other issues crop up. IE some people had 7.4.2 then installed PT 8 over it on 10.5, and you just keep adding layers on top until eventually it just because very mixed up and unstable.

Clean uninstalls and reinstalls are the way to go. Use the PT 8 uninstaller.
But again, this issue has known bugs... so itd be hard to know if its a bad install or just pre release issues.
Works for me too. May need to turn off the high performance graphics under Displays setup for unibody MBP17.
Hello,

I am the user with the system described in the first post. I have now installed 10.6.2 and it works just fine. I have an HD3 Accel system that I use for portable recording, and so far it has been running fine. There has been fewer crashes than with any version of ProTools I've had. This is running on a MacBook Pro with identifier 4,1, which is the early 2008 MacBook Pro, pre Unibody.

However, I don't run any MIDI on this setup. I've heard there are problems with CoreMIDI and the pr release of ProTools 8.03 and some users have successfully loaded the old MIDI files from ProTools 8.0.1 to fix this. I also don't use any VIs, but performance of VIs on PT is weak anyway.

I haven't tested it with video. However, I've done heavy editing on it, up to 60+ tracks at 88.2kHz/24 bits, with no problems. I have to check, but I believe the lower buffer you can set PT is 512 with this setup, but as I said, I have to confirm that when I get to the system.

The one thing that made my setup stable was making absolutely sure that I had the latest versions of the plug ins. Just one plug in that is not listed as compatible, will crash your ProTools system. The only plug in I had to uninstall was Line 6s POD Farm. I don't run any Waves plugs, btw.

I have also been running on the 64-bit kernel and it runs just fine too. I couldn't tell any significant differences with the 32-bit kenel as far as ProTools goes.

There are some graphical glitches here and there that I hope will be ironed out when the supported version is released. For example, the playback head cursor line is jerky at times, and redraws some times take a little longer, but overall, it is just fine.

As posted elsewhere, it is crucial to make a backup of your stable setup before installing 8.03pr. I cloned my hard drive to an external drive running 10.5.8 and PT 7.x and cloned a second one from a PT 8, 10.5.8 system. In case something failed, I can always go back to those which I carry with me to the portable rigs. This is also my portable rig: my studios are running PT 7 or 8.01 on Leopard, not Snow Leopard, until it is qualified by Digidesign.
